When we believe ultimate happiness is found only in God, then we will shut out distractions and open His Word.
If we buy into the lie that happiness is to be found in wealth, beauty, fame, or any number of endless pursuits besides Christ, we’re doomed to unhappiness because we’re pursuing the wrong things.
But when we believe that ultimate happiness and transcendent joy are to be found only in God, then we will, for a time, turn off all our screens—all texts and social media and movies and TV—and open the Word of God, asking His Spirit to speak joy into our lives.
It takes discipline and conscious effort to keep the Lord front and center and to find happiness in Him. But when we do, the payoff is huge.
Perspectives from God’s Word: “You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy” (Psalm 63: 5, NLT).
“Behold, I long for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life!” (Psalm 119: 40).
Perspectives from God’s People: “To be truly happy a man must have sources of gladness which are not dependent on anything in this world.”—J. C. Ryle
“If you hope for happiness in the world, hope for it from God, and not from the world.”—David Brainerd For more: Read the blog post “Longing for Happiness: Perspectives from Blaise Pascal”: epm.org/ happinesspascal
