Red Clover Blossoms

Red Clover is an alterative herb. This means that it alters the way the body reacts to stress - emotional, physical or environmental - helping the body and mind to stay calm.

Red Clover has been considered one of nature's best supplements!!

Red Clover is high in:

  • Vitamin C
  • B vitamins
  • beta-carotene
  • calcium
  • magnesium
  • zinc
  • copper
  • manganese
  • selenium

Uses:

  • clears lymphatic congestion
  • skin issues:  eczema, psoriasis, burns, blisters, dry lips, even skin cancer (effective when taken internally and used as a wash or lotion)
  • lymphatic and blood cleansing
  • respiratory problems (because it is gentle, it is especially good for children)
  • Menopause
  • PMS

Because red clover blossoms are rich in plant hormones (phytoestrogens), they are know to be helpful in reducing uncomfortable menopausal symptoms!  Yippee!! :0)

A blend of red clover, sage and mother wort is a good blend for help with hot flashes and mood swings!

Red Clover Whipped Lotion

Yields 2 to 3 cups

  • 1 cup fresh red clover blossoms
  • 1 cup cocoa butter
  • 1 to 2 cups distilled water or rose water
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons jojoba or sweet almond oil (optional)

Make a tiny batch of this lotion at a time, perhaps for special occasions when you want your

face to glow. It’s extremely rich and, depending on how much water you add, can be dense or

light as a cloud.

  1. Place the herbs and cocoa butter in a bowl.
  2. Without heating, use a spoon to mix the blossoms into the cocoa butter.
  3. Cover and store in a dark cabinet or pantry.
  4. Steep for two weeks.
  5. In the top of a double boiler, gently heat the cocoa butter just until you can strain out the blossoms.
  6. Discard them and pour the melted cocoa butter into a deep soup pot (this is to reduce splattering).
  7. Using a wire whisk or an electric hand mixer, slowly add the distilled water by the tablespoonful, whisking constantly, until you have the desired consistency.
  8. Add the oil if  desired, and whisk together. Scrape the lotion into a small container.

This lotion lasts several weeks when refrigerated.”***

Orange Peel

Peels from the Sweet Orange family have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine since at least the 2nd century BC.

There are substantially more enzymes, flavonoids, and phyto-nutrients in the Orange peel than in the fruit itself.  All of the essential components accumulate in the peel, begging the question, "Why in the world don't we use the peel?!?!"

Orange Peel is rich in:

image.jpg
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B1
  • Choline
  • Folic Acid
  • flavonoids (60+)
  • d-limonene
  • alpha-carotene
  • beta-carotene
  • numerous vitamins & minerals

I used to purchase orange peel powder from Mountain Rose Herbs, however, as I was tossing out my organic orange peels one day, I wondered why I don't I make it myself?!  So now I do, and it is SO much better when it is fresh and home prepared!  The fresh orange scent and flavor is amazing!

Here's how I do it:

  • peel orange :)
  • hang or spread peel out to dry
  • when peel is dry and firm like a cracker, blend in blender until powdered
  • store in a jar in a cool dark cupboard

How To Use:

  • In place of powdered Vitamin C, such as "Airborne" or "Emergen C", I mix this (and a few other powdered herbs) in a little water or juice. See future post on Vitamin C Powder
  • Use in recipes that call for Orange Zest or Orange Peel
  • Put, along with a few other powdered herbs into capsules and take as you would vitamin C
